The San Diego North Park Craft Mafia is more connected than you might know. We got some hot news that we get the privilege to announce first on our blog!

Dancing Bear Indian Trader, a bead, fabric & Native American craft supply store in Vista, will be moving to Escondido in February! This bead store that has Czech beads, Japanese beads, natural bone & shell beads, feathers, leather, Preciosa Crystal beads and over 500 bolts of quilter quality fabrics will be moving to a bigger and more accessible location. The schedule of the last day at the old location in Vista & opening day at new location in Escondido and new Escondido address will be posted the next couple of days. We are excited about this, because Dancing Bear Indian Trader will be the Bead Store of Escondido, to go to, and it's going to be 20 minutes closer to everyone in San Diego.

We have had our "Crafty Conspiracy" craft nights at Dancing Bear Indian Trader for several months now. This Tuesday, Jan 24 will be the last "Crafty Conspiracy" in Vista, in the old Dancing Bear Indian Trader location.

Café Libertalia, a Mico Mall featuring an Internet cafe in the heart of Hillcrest has a new tenant. As of November Mostly Magpie by Darcy Stumbaygh has taken up the front vendor space of the cafe and is offering unique reclaimed jewelry and components, fun screen prints, and exceptional leatherwork. I had a blast sorting through her selection of watch parts used and new and eclectic assortment of beads.

“We have lots of vintage jewelry at low prices, ideal for either accessorizing or for making new treasures, and we specialize in old pocket and wristwatch movements and parts for repair or steampunking. We are fully stocked with leather, supplies, and tools and are available 1pm-9pm (and often longer) for do-it-yourself leatherworking, with free instruction, assistance, and use of awesome tools. Make bracelets, watch bands, belts, buckles, leatherbound journals and more. Our steampunk supplies include mechanical watches and parts, brass rivets snaps and findings, glass vials, butterfly wings, feathers, old coins, old brooches, and shiny things. We sell real Victorian antiques. We're also full of beads and findings with tools available to make your own jewelry on-site, so come on in to learn and create with us!"

As of mid December Café Libertalia is offering access to a kiln and ceramic classes. December 17th the cafe will host a Holiday Extravaganza. Locally, Yelp has asked shoppers to take their "Yelp Shops Local Pledge" and buy from local shops & businesses. We'd like to add the "Buy Handmade" pledge to your list of pledges! Handmade products are great gifts and when you buy directly from the artists who created them, you get that extra personal touch by knowing where your product came from. It's almost like getting something custom made since handmade products are not made in mass production like some items from overseas. Where can you find these unique handmade gifts? Catalina Swing Dance Festival Nov 18-20, 2011

If you don't know what to do this weekend and you would like to get away, here's a great event that is happening this weekend, 26 miles away from the coast of Los Angeles. There is also a Saturday only option. Take the Catalina Express over in the morning, enjoy the day exploring Avalon, and then go to the dance/concert, and then take the special late night boat back home. No hotels, and a great time is assured.

JOIN US AT THE “CATALINA SWING DANCE FESTIVAL” – in all the world, no event like this!

The Catalina Swing Dance Festival will take place November 18-20, 2011 in Avalon, CA – We anticipate having 400+ swing dancers descend on Catalina: a small, picturesque island 22 miles west of mainland Los Angeles famous for its quaint inns, breathtaking landscape and clear waters.

Swing dancers from around the world will once again “cut a rug” all weekend in the beautiful Casino Ballroom on the island. This event will be filled with social dancing, workshops, and live music. All levels are welcome for dance workshops and even those that don’t dance and want to sit back and enjoy the live music and performances in the evening are encouraged to attend. The Catalina Swing Dance Festival will be the only weekend event featuring what the building was originally built for – dancing!

“You will not find a more beautiful setting for an evening dance or weekend festival than the casino ballroom”, says Joel Plys the organizer of the event. “The long-term goal is to build the festival to a weeklong event featuring live music and dancing throughout Avalon.”

ABOUT THE CASINO BALLROOM:

The Casino Ballroom is situated on Sugar Loaf Point at the northern end of Avalon Harbor. This Art Deco building was completed in the Spring of 1929, and is an engineering masterpiece. The structure stood taller than any building in Los Angeles at the time. The ballroom took its name from the Italian "place of entertainment," and does not actually have gambling of any kind. At the time of its construction, America was immersed in the Jazz Age and "swing fever" had taken hold, with large dance halls called "casinos" popping up throughout the country. The Avalon Casino, by far one of the most spectacular ballrooms in the United States (and the largest circular ballroom in the world), drew thousands of dancers who would come by steamship from the mainland.

Twelve stories high and 180 feet in diameter, the Casino holds a large movie theater on the first floor with remarkable acoustic features and an immense hand-painted mural depicting the geography and history of Catalina Island.
Above the theatre lies the Ballroom.

At 10,000 square feet it boasts an arched 50 foot domed ceiling that holds five Tiffany chandeliers, rose-colored walls made up of full-length panoramic windows; an expansive outdoor balcony, an elevated stage, and spacious seating surround the circular dance floor.

This ballroom was built for dancers. The hardwood floor is constructed over layers of foam, pine and cork, all of which are suspended over five feet of air. It makes for a dancer's dream, and eliminates all noise that could otherwise disturb the theatre below.

Goddess or Renaissance Maiden?

A few Fridays back, Lindsay and I appeared on San Diego Living dressed as goddesses in togas. We explained how to easily make a toga costume and how to make some accessories to wear with it. It was such a quick segment that I thought I should share some pictures on how to make the floral head-wreath I showed.

What you will need:

6 Pipe cleaners / chenille stems

1 Roll green floral tape

3 Bunches of silk flowers (15-20 individual flowers)

1 Pair craft wire cutters (very helpful, not 100% necessary)

1. Bend over one inch at the end of two chenille stems, then hook them together and twist them closed.

2. Then center an additional pipe cleaner over the joint formed by the last two and twist them together to double it up and give it some strength.

Test the size, you may need to add another stem to make it fit around your head, just add it by repeating steps 1 & 2. Make sure you have doubled up the stems all the way around the circle to keep it from being too floppy. Mine took 3 to go around and another 3 to reinforce.

3. Cut flowers off of bunch with 2 inches of stem using wire cutters

(Watch the video clip above for a tip on how to remove the flowers with out wire cutters.)

4. Wrap the craft tape in a tight over-lapping spiral around the stems of the flowers and the pipe cleaner, adding a new flower about every inch and a half to two inches (this may vary depending upon size of flowers).

5. Finish with some ribbon streamers just for fun and you too can be a goddess or a Renaissance maiden.

Depending upon what flowers you choose it can be an accessory to many different costumes, and they are quite popular to wear at Renaissance fairs. This event offers international foods, arts and crafts, and a children's halloween costume parade. Located in Claremont Village this annual events has attracted over 20,000 visitors and this year will will offer over 450 arts and crafts booths including photography, pottery, jewelry, and garden accessories. Rae Wolf Designs will be the monthly featured artist of the Diamond Center, located in the Village.

'Sunday, Crafty Sunday' - Dia de los Muertos - Don't forget!!!

The feeling of wet beach sand, the memory of molding wet sand castles as a child, rememberance of the dead, celebration of life the sweetness of sugar and the hard work of the hands . . . The sugar skull factory began Monday night to get ready for our 'Sunday Crafty, Sunday' Dia de los Muertos event to be held in Balboa Park. With the use of sugar given the texture of wet beach sand, one hundred skulls were molded with the intent to be given away at this event. Similar to life, each skull is fragile during creation, ready to crumble if a wrong move is made. As they cure the skull hardens to become more durable; however, if dropped a shattering effect can occur with the cumbling of the the sweet sugar in which they were created. A waiting prcess begins as each skull must dry and then the celebration of the decoration of these skull will begin. The process can take several days to create as each skull becomes their own. Be one of the first one hundred individuals to attend and recieve one of these hand-made sugar skulls and a marigold.

When you attend be ready to use your own hands to create a fun craft to take home at our DIY crafting table. Enjoy the music of a DJ and fill your stomach with food. COme and see our own ofrenda (or altar). This is a celebration so remember to bring your money we've got alot of crafty vendors that put the hard work of their hands into the wonderful creations they have to sell. Come to our 'Sunday, Crafty Sunday' Dia de los Muertos event located at the Centro de las Raza in Balboa Park, right off Park Blvd. It's alot of fun and a time for celebration. Don't miss it!!!

The Craft Mafia has been very pleased to be a part of the Friday Night Liberty (FNL) events for the summer. We've brought together some very crafty vendors this year which have made for great Friday night shopping! Sadly, as the summer weather comes to an end, so must our vendor shopping area for it will soon be colder outside in the evening. Don't worry, we'll be back next year once it warms up again! If you are a vendor who is interested in having a booth, please email us and we will make sure to let you know when the shopping events are starting up again. Just because our vendors won't be there, doesn't mean that the FNL events are ending. They continue all year long with participating galleries, studios, and special presentations scheduled.

If you are a vendor and still want to apply to the Holiday Hit List, we are accepting applications for the next round of jurying, so get your apps. in by October 31st! Avoid the late fee & get you app. in before October 1st!

Also, we are no longer accepting any more jewelry vendors. We always limit the number of vendors who sell jewelry in order to have a wide variety of products available to our shoppers.

It's that time again! We are now accepting applications for our 5th Annual Holiday Hit List happening on December 4th, 2011! This year we are moving back to the NTC Promenade. The Corky McMillan Event Center is a fabulous venue with lots of free parking for vendors and shoppers! There are also lots of great places to eat and get refreshments. We've created an FAQ page that should answer many of your questions. Please read through that and then apply online. If you apply by July 31st, you can get in on last year's prices! Fees will increase on August 1st, so don't delay! All vendors are juried to ensure quality products and variety of crafts represented. Today's Lunar Eclipse!!!

Today there was a total lunar eclipse! Although we did not get to see it ourselves from our location on the planet, it was amazing! The center point of the Earth's shadow passed across the Moon dimming it totally for almost 2 hours!

This type of eclipse hasn't happened in about 11 years but will happen again in December.

This type of cosmic event effects us in ways we may never even notice or be aware of, but one thing is for sure: let that creativity roll out on out of you!

Hi super friends! I hope that you were able to come out and join us for the North Park Festival of the Arts! We sure had a great time, and we enjoyed seeing some familiar vendors and meeting some new ones!

This is my favorite event of the year, as the crowd is always really friendly and out to have a great time (being next to the craft beer area sure helps)! We're able to offer some great discounted spaces for our vendors through our group, which makes us feel good! Thank you all for participating.

For the next few months, we're hoping to do some of the Friday Night Liberty events the first Friday of the month in Liberty Station. Our lovely Velvet Klaw has her fabulous screen printing studio there. Make sure and stop by every first Friday to see her lovely shop and studio, and even sign up for a screen printing class! And vendors, please let us know if you're interesting in participating!

Join Us For a Night of Fashion at "Friday Night Liberty" - May 6th!

You're invited to the NTC Promenade Arts & Cultural District for a FREE evening of happenings. On May 6th, Arts Meets Fashion, collaboration between local fashion designers & artists offers an outdoor dance performance at Legacy Plaza. Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater presents a preview of New Voices with 2 sections from "Hunters Trilogy" and a cast of 10 dancers. Followed by a Fashion Show & Open Catwalk in the Rose Garden. See featured designer's fashions and then join in the action yourself! Show up wearing fashions from local designers, fill out a note card for the MC to read, and strut your stuff!

Be sure to stop by the Velvet Klaw Studios, located in Barracks 19, for a hands-on screen printing and t-shirt reconstruction demo! Bring a light colored t-shirt and print your own shirt to cut up, restyle and take home! Screen printing is a fun way to create your own fashions!

There will also be several crafty vendors who will be set up around the venue selling their wares. Look for them next to the Visions Art Museum and Barracks 19! You may be aware that we host a monthly crafting event called Crafty Conspiracy. It's a casual evening of crafting fun that happens at the Velvet Klaw studio the fourth Tuesday each month. People work on everything from knitting & crochet to computer arts. Basically, any project that's portable is fine to bring. It's great fun, so now we are adding a second event dedicated to those who like to stitch it up on their sewing machines! Since we don't have room for machines at our regular craft night, we're adding this special night where machines are welcome. Bring your own machine and meet other "Stitchies" who share a love for creating! We'll supply an iron and ironing board, cutting table, and other incidentals - you bring everything else you need to create! New York, I love you.

I was just lucky enough to spend five days in New York city with a group of friends and we had a blast. I was amazed how much the city has changed, even in the few years since I've been there. I could have counted the crazies we encountered on one hand. There was very little trash on the street, and cops all over the place. I never had a problem catching a cab and other than being cold (30 degrees is cold to me, shh) our experience was wonderful. We even went down into the Bowery and up into Hell's Kitchen. Other than the scowling hipsters, I felt welcome wherever we went. People were polite and had a sense of humor. I never felt in danger (other than my wallet cringing when I went to the Sanrio store in Times Square - I only bought one thing, you should be proud of me). The food was good (except one lukewarm latte, darn it) and the prices were reasonable.

My husband grew up in Brooklyn and I love his stories of the city and his adventures, like when he was a teenager skipping school and heading down to sketchy Canal street for cheap electronic parts and a crazy dude with a screwdriver stealing his belt on the subway. That is not the New York of today, it's clean and friendly while being the same vibrant and interesting place it has always been. The shopping is weird and awesome, and the architecture is gorgeous.

I was rather naughty and spent more time yapping with my friends, walking about 20 miles through the streets and shopping than taking photos (I have almost no photographs of any interest, I only took pictures of my friends being morons). But here's a photo of some of the cool things I came home with from various places all over the city.

Chocolate Chip Cookies stuffed with an Oreo

About 3 weeks ago I saw a post about this recipe on facebook. Etsy had shared a new cookie. Here's the link, click here A cookie that has a hidden surprise. It has an OREO cookie inside, cool! Someone came up with a cool way to do an old thing. Taking it to the next level. It's what us modern crafters do. I wanted to attempt this recipe, cuz it is such a COOL idea and try it out, so here goes!!

Here's what you need:
Oven
Mixer
Bowls
Cookie Sheet
Parchment Paper
Double Stuff Oreos
Chocolate Chips, 12 oz.

Ok here's the recipe. I used Nestle Chocolate Cookie recipe:

2 cups of Flour
1 tsp of salt
1 tsp of baking soda
Mix these together in their own bowl

1 cup of Butter (two sticks)
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
Mix these together, once they are combined, slowly add in the flour mixture.
Mix in the chocolate chips.

Put the mix in the fridge and let it harden.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

This was the most successful batch

For each cookie, make a ball that is the width of the cookie and gently press it down, being careful to not crush the oreo. And make a pancake flat dough piece for the oreo to sit on. I didn't cover the sides, I let the cookie melt down the sides, and it actually looked like the cookies on the other sites. Hmmmm... I wonder how many cookies they made before they took their pics. I placed them on the pan like how they look in the pic directly above.

Bake for 10-14 minutes or until golden brown.
Bake on Parchment paper, it's easier clean up and it lifts of the paper nice.

Let them cool before moving them.

Only bake about 6 at a time, cuz the dough spreads out. And don't expect to get it right on your first try. I had to do several different mini batches to figure it out. See below.. I took some pictures of the examples, that the other blogs didn't mention. I'm sure that they omitted their mistakes to make it look easy. It's easy, but they didn't give these tips! I had to figure them out myself! Have fun with this baking project. I had a great time with it!

Don't Get Pinched This St. Patrick's Day! Make This Rockin' Knit Shamrock to Wear!

Austin Craft Mafia member, Vickie Howell, shares this crafty little project perfect for St. Patrick's Day! If green really isn't your color, then why not make one of these cute little shamrocks to wear on March 17th. You can sew them to a t-shirt or glue a pin to the back and wear on a sweater or jacket. MATERIALS
Scraps of Green, Sock Yarn

Size US 2 (2.75mm) Needles

Tapestry Needle

Tulip Cordless Heat Setting Tool

Tulip Glam-it Up! Iron-On Crystals

SHAMROCK SIZES

Large = 3 1/2" tall

Small = 2 1/2" tall

How to Knit:

MITERED LEAVES (Make 3..or 4, if you're feeling lucky!)
CO 18 (20) sts.

Larger Size Only
Row 1: K8, ssk, k2tog, k8.

Rows 2,4,6,8: Knit

Both Sizes (for smaller size, treat Row 3 as 1)

Row 3: K7, ssk, k2tog, k7.
Row 5: K6, ssk, k2tog, k6.
Row 7: K5, ssk, k2tog, k5.
Row 9: k4:ssk, k2tog, k4
Row 10: Ssk, BO to last 2 sts (you’ll still have one st on the RH needle as well), ssk, BO remaining sts.

Using a tapestry needle, sew leaves together.

Pick up 3 sts at base of shamrock and knit a 1 1/2"-2" i-cord stem (for an i-cord refresher, see my how-to video). BO.

Curve stem with your fingers. Weave in ends.

How to BeJewell:

1. Use a heatproof surface such as a ceramic tile to rest heat tool on between applications and while cooling. Set slightly away from work area to prevent burns.
2. Move button to ON position and hold button down to heat. Press tip on tissue or paper. When ready, a scorched spot will appear.
3. Hold tool straight up and touch top of embellishment. Hard pressure is not needed, heat will melt glue. Too much pressure will cause tip to slip and burn your knitted piece!
4. Allow tool to heat up again if laid down or finger is removed from button.

Ideas for What to Do with Your Shamrock:

Hot glue or sew a pin to the back, and wear it as a "Don't Pinch Me" brooch.
Use a little Tacky Glue to paste it on a card front, for a one-of-a-kind St. Patty's Day greeting.
Use as an applique by hand tacking or using decorative embroidery to sew your "shams" onto a tote bag, pillow, t-shirt, onsie, and more!
Make neck garland by knitting a whole slew of shamrocks and attaching them to a long piece of ribbon or crochet chain. See my Love Rocks garland for inspiration.

Spring is Coming - Time to Get Ready for Our 4th Annual Spring Line Up!

Happy Groundhog Day! It's official! Spring is on its way and the Craft Mafia crew is getting ready for our 4th Annual "Spring Line Up" event! What's the Spring Line Up (SLU)? It's our annual show which takes place within the North Park Festival of the Arts in North Park. This year's event will be happening on Sunday, May 15th from 10 am to 6 pm along University Ave. between 30th and 32nd Streets. The SLU is our own section of vendors who will be selling some fantastic crafty items. All SLU vendors are artists and crafters who take pride in the things they create. Each year we try to bring together a variety of vendors with an assortment of creative products. The NP Festival of the Arts is always a lot of fun with something for everyone. Entertainment will include live music, dance performances, a food court, kids zone, hand-on art booths, and a beer and food tasting court! Admission to the event is FREE (you will need to purchase a ticket for the beer/food tasting) and parking is available in the 30th St. parking structure. This is a great event for the whole family and a great opportunity for crafty vendors to show their wares!

Councilmember DeMaio Schedules December 14 Budget Town Hall at NTC Promenade Arts & Cultural District: Proposes Cuts to Arts Funding

Dear San Diego Arts and Culture Colleagues:

You may have heard about the proposal from San Diego City Councilmember Carl DeMaio to significantly cut arts and culture funding in his “Roadmap to Recovery.”
You can read about the cuts at Voice of San Diego (The proposed cuts to arts and culture come on page 37 of the Roadmap PDF.)

Councilmember DeMaio is holding a series of public Budget Town Halls to brief San Diegans on the Road to Recovery plan, answer questions and listen to their ideas.

A Town Hall is scheduled for Tuesday, December 14 from 6pm to 8pm at the NTC Command Center, 2640 Historic Decatur Road. The Command Center is in the heart of the city’s planned 26-building Civic, Arts and Cultural District at the former Naval Training Center.

Already 7 buildings are renovated and are home to over 40 Civic, Arts and Cultural organizations and artists - many of which will be impacted by the Councilmember’s proposed cuts.

Representatives from arts and cultural organizations are encouraged to attend the Forum and can RSVP at Roadmap to Recovery Facebook Page and click the "I'm Attending" button in the upper right corner.

In advance of the Town Hall, on Thursday, December 9 at 10 AM, These Days on KPBS will air a segment about this discussion. Dalouge Smith, CEO of San Diego Youth Symphony and outgoing Chair of San Diego Regional Arts & Culture Coalition, and Seema Sueko, Artistic Director of Mo`olelo Performing Arts Company, will be on air.

The Holiday Hit List is almost here! This Sunday December 5th, the doors open at noon and the first 100 shoppers arriving at our Holiday Hit List show will be lucky enough to get a very cool swag bag filled with goodies and coupons from our members and our talented vendors. The bags this year are super fabulous, screenprinted by our own Velvet Klaw. The bags are bright red with black trim, reusable and eco-friendly, great for craft show shopping!

Inside your swag bags from our members are sparkly pencils from Velvet Klaw, silk card holders from Belle Pepper, puzzle piece hair clips from Meagan Rae Designs, skull and rose pinback buttons from Artista Muerta. Some of the bags contain extra special packets of craft supplies from Belle Pepper and Dancing Bear Indian Trader. Looking for a FREE art event this week? Look no further than the Friday Night Liberty in the NTC Promenade at Liberty Station. If this is your first visit to the NTC Promenade, then you are in for a treat! Friday Night Liberty is a monthly first-Friday evening of FREE open artist studios, galleries and events throughout NTC Promenade Arts & Cultural District. What kind of studios? Everything from oil painting to original fashion designs and photography. This month's event will mark the premiere of the Velvet Klaw Studio! That's right, you can visit NPCM member Velvet Klaw at the NTC's Barracks 19 building! Barracks 19 is the first of several buildings that are being renovated to create artist studios and gallery spaces. It's a great place with many events happening each month! The studio will offer workshops where you can learn how to screen print and will host the NPCM's monthly craft night events! In addition, there will be a retail area where you can find products from all the NPCM members and other artists. Get a sneak peak before the official Grand Opening & Reception on November 20th. While you're there, have a walk around to the other buildings and visit the Visions Art Museum, which features art quilts from nine countries, and check out the performing arts studios that feature music, dance, and martial arts. Admission to all the galleries and studios is free and there's plenty of free parking!

The North Park Craft Mafia supports all things DIY - and that includes sports & recreation, which brings us to skating! Did you know that San Diego has only ONE roller rink in the entire city? Skateworld has been keepin' the good times rollin' since 1975 and now they are in danger of being forced to close their rink in Linda Vista. We can't let that happen. The Friends of Skateworld (FOSW) is a nonprofit group that is working diligently to see that San Diego keeps this rink. Please visit their website and read about what has been going on with the city council. The FOSW is also organizing some fun fundraising events to help get the public involved. What is the University Heights Arts Open & the Taste of UH? This is a collaborative event with the University Heights Community Development Corp. and Taste of University Heights. So, get ready for lots of fun, food, and art! It all happens on Sunday, September 12, 2010, from noon to 5 p.m. So, what will be waiting for you in University Heights? What is there to do? Well, you can stroll through the quaint neighborhood while enjoying sample delicacies from some of University Heights diverse restaurants. Then, enjoy a free self guided tour of the arts. The UH Arts Open showcases the works of over 100 new as well as celebrated artists, playwrights, performers and musicians from the San Diego region enlivening the historic University Heights community. The UHAO incorporates local businesses, schools, churches, theaters, and a free shuttle tour of artist studios in the area.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Teachers Annex Building located at the intersection of Park Blvd. and El Cajon Blvd. The grassy open area will serve as the Artwalk area, featuring visual artists of all mediums, as well as historic groups, community groups, the taste ticket will call, free parking and shuttle start. The Craftabout is a crafty event that's held at the Whistlstop Bar during the Walkabouts in South Park! You'll find lots of artisans set up with booths and selling their wares. Very cool & a lot of fun! Your NP Craft Mafia members will be there, so stop by and say hello! Are You Crafty On Skates? Join the Fight to Save San Diego's Last Roller Rink!

I grew up skating at the Palisade Gardens roller rink on University Ave. in North Park. Many Saturday afternoons were spent there and I developed a love for the sport of roller skating. When the rink closed its doors in 1985 it was a great loss to the community of North Park. I hadn't roller skated for a number of years, but picked it up again when I discovered women's flat-track roller derby! I skate with San Diego Roller Derby at Skateworld, our home rink. Now the rink needs your help. Skateworld, the last remaining roller rink in the city of San Diego, is in danger of losing its lease. The San Diego Redevelopment Agency has an exclusive negotiation agreement with a private development company (MRW) for the property on which Skateworld is located. This company has indicated that they plan to redevelop the property and the future of Skateworld is uncertain.

Skateworld has been an outstanding member of the Linda Vista community for nearly 35 years. This establishment attracts visitors from all over San Diego County and has made many positive contributions to the public. Skateworld hosts fundraisers for various causes, provides family-friendly activities, and employs many who would not find jobs elsewhere, such as teens with no previous work history. Businesses adjacent to the rink are also supported by Skateworld’s patrons. Many San Diegans, who remember skating there as children, now take their own families to Skateworld. Closing this rink would be a devastating loss for all of San Diego County.

Please join all of us who love Skateworld by voicing your support of the rink to the San Diego City Council. The community of Linda Vista is represented by 6th District Council Member Donna Frye. Belle Pepper Couture - “My focus is making colorful, fun and fashionable clothing and accessories for pets that are made in the USA, and high quality. I'm working on some different items. New designs that I have been thinking about for a while. New outfits, new fabric patterns for collars, and new fabrics for the fleece vests. Everyday I'm reminded by my sweetheart doggies, Belle, Pepper and Bambi. They always want to be dressed. So I'm always changing their accessories. I love looking at fabric design, color and textures, they give me lots of inspiration. Also, I like to see the current trends of fashion to be inspired to create cool new looks for doggies.”

Velvet Klaw - “I love to work in many different mediums, so I’m always trying something new. This year I have a new line of jewelry made from vintage flatware. I’ve also been working in digital collage and creating fun journals and notebooks and have recently returned my attention to millinery design, so you will see some hats in the fashion show! I love all things vintage and find inspiration from many sources including china, silverware, and textile patterns.”

Meagan Rae Designs - “My designs are fun, funky fashions and accessories inspired by re-inventing re-cycled items for an urban girlie style. New MR Designs include re-fashioned t-shirts paired with full cocktail skirts, accessorized by origami dangle earrings and recycled handbags. I am overwhelmed with inspiration in everything, all of the time. People around me, nature walks with my dog, Sex and the City re-runs, and vintage anything keeps my mind from ever stopping!!!! When I'm focused, the end product is very exciting!”

Alexander Henry Fabric, Loteria Print, Out of Print , But We Can Change That!!

Hi There Alexander Henry fans, and Loteria print fans!

I am going to start to get together a massive order for the Loteria fabric design from Alexander Henry. For those who love this fabric and make stuff out of it, this will be a chance for us to tell them, "Hey! We love this fabric and we want it reprinted!!!" There are two colorways that I want to have them reprint. The Black background and the White Background(Natural).

Currently, this fabric is out of print. That means that at this time it is not avaliable, because the printed run of these lovely loteria cards has sold out. I know this fabric is a VERY popular one! I sold this fabric like CRAZY when I had it in my fabric shop.

I have to get together an order of over 1000 yards of each design(2000 total). I figured, it's about 134 bolts of 15 yards.

If you are interested in buying a bolt, or more, let me know, I will be starting up a list of interested buyers.

You do not want to miss this one! What could be better than spending an afternoon drawing live models? Drawing live models at a cocktail lounge, of course! This Saturday, May 16th, Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School will be happening at the Ruby Room in Hillcrest from 3 - 6 pm. You bring your sketch pad, drawing supplies, and some cash for libations from the bar, and Dr. Sketchy provides the models! Each month the good doctor brings burlesque dancers, belly dancers, and now - roller girls! This month will feature members of San Diego Roller Derby in their derby best and some other fun costumes. What kind of costumes? That's a secret. You'll have to check it out and see! Who exactly is Dr. Sketchy? Dr. Sketchy’s is the little Brooklyn event that became a movement. It was founded in 2005 by artist Molly Crabapple, Dr. Sketchy’s asked a simple question. Why can’t drawing people be sexy? From its humble Brooklyn beginnings, Dr. Sketchy’s now has 70+ branches around the globe, including Hollywood, London, Tokyo, Rome, and Melbourne. Since it’s successful launch during Comic Con 2007, Dr. Sketchy’s San Diego branch has been going strong each month. It's great fun and you can even win a prize for your drawing! This month there will be prizes donated by your own Craft Mafia and the SDRD. You have to draw to win! We want to see you there!

Two Great Events Happening in May!

The Mafia is busy as always! We are organizing two great events that are coming up in May. We'll be bringing you another Sunday, Crafty Sunday event on May 3rd at Filter Coffee House from noon to 5 p.m. This is just in time for all the Mother's Day shoppers! Interested vendors should check out our FAQ page where you will find all the details about the show and an online application. The next show we have coming up is the 2nd Annual Spring Line Up. This year's show will be a part of the larger 13th Annual North Park Festival of the Arts event! We will be working with our friends from the North Park Main Street on this one. They organize the NPFA event and we'll be taking care of the Spring Line Up section. This free, all ages event takes place on May 17th along University Ave. between 30th and 32nd Streets from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Spring Line Up vendors section will be located at the west end of the event between 30th & Ohio Streets. This is a huge event with past attendance topping 35,000! There's so much to see at this yearly event that we can't list it all here. Well, we here at the San Diego North Park Craft Mafia are finally recovering from a whirlwind holiday season, and we are ready to get back to work! Full steam ahead! Here are some of the things that we are putting together for January:

The ladies of the SDNPCM will be on the San Diego Living morning show every Friday beginning in January! Tune in each week to catch a different Mafia member demonstrating a totally fun craft that you can make at home. San Diego Living airs on CW 6 at 9 am in San Diego. But if you miss an episode or are outside the San Diego area, don't despair! We will be featuring each episode on YouTube!

The monthly newsletter is out! Get the January 2009 edition & read our interview with Faythe Levine!

This month's Crafty Conspiracy night will be held on Tuesday, January 27th, at Filter Coffee House in North Park. Come hang out with us and relax! Bring whatever crafty item you are currently working on, or just stop by for coffee, treats and crafty conversation. Everyone is welcome!

A Trunk Show at Pawparazzi!

NPCM Founding Member, Svea Komori, is having a show! Pawparazzi Pet Boutique will be hosting a trunk show for Belle Pepper Couture on Friday, April 25th from 5-8 pm. They're located at 8283 La Mesa Blvd., La Mesa, CA. ph:(619) 464-1744. They'll be making collars and jewelry to order - and showing a lot of new items for Spring!

PAWPARAZZI PET BOUTIQUE ***Upscale, Trendy & Chic boutique offering gifts for you and your pet. ***It's a pampered dog's life, nothing is too good or PAWsh when it comes to pet pampering. ***Devine dresses & trendy clothes will have heads turning! The date you all have been waiting for is approaching fast – the Spring Line Up is this Sunday, March 30th! We have been working hard to make this a fantastic event and you won’t be disappointed! Here’s a look at the bands and performers we have rounded up:

12 pm - Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School (drawing class)
12:45 - Urban Tribal Dance Company
1:30 - Fashion Show
2:30 - Architect Sketch
3:15 - The Down Stroke
4:00 - Castillo
4:45 - The Messenger
5:30 – Jezebel

There will be free prizes raffled off all day long and complimentary swag bags for the first guests –what a steal! Plus: demos by Sew Hut, and extraordinary food and beverages from the Other Side Coffee shop.

We will see you there -- to miss this event would constitute a felony!

Our new members will be presented for their debut craft show on Sunday, March 2, at the Other Side coffee house in North Park. This will an excellent opportunity to meet and greet the lovely new members of the San Diego North Park Craft Mafia!
