Whispers of the Forest

The beautiful song of a bird. The tantalizing hiss of a snake. Playful screeches from a troupe
of monkeys. The sounds of rain. All combined with larger than life puppets Whispers of the Forest comes to life. Come see the Great Gamoola, the 9 ft. tall talking tree, at the Marie HitchcockAdd Image Puppet Theater in Balboa Park from March 28th to April 1st, as he tells the story of how he was once in danger of the woodcutters axe. Will his animal friends be able to save him?

A show for all ages, young and old, the larger than life puppets will capture the imagination of the audience as each puppet comes to life. Puppetry is a form of theater that has been around for hundreds of years. It is a way to bring visualization to a story being told. Performed at the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater, the longest continuously running puppet theater in the United States, Whispers of the Forest is a full stage puppet show consisting of both marionettes and other styles of puppetry. This show is both educational and entertaining combined into one experience. So come see Whispers of the Forest in action and help save the Great Gamoola from the woodcutters axe.
Hear the beautiful song of the pheonix.
See the praying of the mantis.
Or hear the grubbing chant of the warthog.
Come See

My husband and I met swing dancing, and our favorite dance is Balboa! It's such a fun dance to learn, and it's a lot easier to do than most swing dances. I'm sharing this event with you, because I have gone for many years and I have learned a lot and had the most amazing dances at the Balboa Rendezvous. You don't need a partner and they have beginner level Balboa workshops. I hope you can make the event. -Svea, Belle Pepper Couture

Here's info about the event:

At the end of this month there will be a fantastic world known swing dance festival here in San Diego, Balboa Rendezvous. March 29-April 1 will be the 9th time that people from all over the world, like Germany, England, Australia & New Zealand just to name a few, will be travelling here to do some Balboa swing dance. Balboa is a dance from the 1930s that originated in Southern California, Balboa Island to be exact, at the Rendezvous Ballroom. There will be live music every night, beginning to advanced workshops during the days, competitions, and a Balboa Rendezvous Cup Trophy that will have a new home for this year. This is the website for the event:

Here's the press release about the event:

San Diego, CA, March 1, 2012 -2 Ply Swing Productions presents the 9th annual Balboa Rendezvous, March 30-April 1, 2012. The Balboa Rendezvous is a celebration of the original 1930s Swing dance created in California. ‘Jitterbugs’ would gather at the amazing Rendezvous Ballroom on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach to cut a rug. The dance floors were so crowded that couples had to move closely connected and thus the balboa was born. The ballroom no longer exists, but the dance continues to flourish all over the world. The Balboa Rendezvous is one of the largest and most popular events and is held right here in San Diego.
We honor the history of the dance by going up to the Balboa Peninsula on Sunday to dance at the historic Balboa Pavilion. The Pavilion is the last of the historic ballrooms used during the heyday of the swing era. Original dancers from the 1930s are invited to share their memories and of course dance with the younger generation of Balboa fans.
The Balboa Rendezvous was started in 2004 and has become one of the most respected balboa weekends in the world. The event includes:
* 4 nights of live music
* 2 days of dance workshops in San Diego (Portuguese Hall in Point Loma2818 Avenida De Portugal, San Diego, CA 92106-2705 & The Dance Center in Liberty Station, Building 175, 2650 Truxton Rd, San Diego, CA 92106),
* Dancing where it all began – The Balboa Pavilion in Newport Beach, 400 Main St, Newport Beach, CA 92661-1330,
* Learning from the masters of balboa – the original dancers from the 30s’
* Top Balboa couples compete for the coveted traveling Rendezvous Cup.
There will also be additional competitions including: amateur Jack & Jill, open Jack & Jill, amateur couples, and charleston challenge.

Peeps!

Hey friends, Artista Muerta here with my very last blog post for the San Diego North Park Craft Mafia. I'm am resigning from the group as life is so busy I'm not able to perform my duties to the best of my ability. It's been a real fun couple of years and I want to thank my Mafiosas for a great time and tons of support! And I'll still be around coming to craft nights and going to shows, I will see you around for sure!

And even though Easter isn't for a few weeks, I wanted to write about one of my favorite Easter treats! Peeps!!! I love me some peeps (and now they're not just for Easter which is pretty much the best thing ever). Here are some great ideas. I cannot WAIT to try out some Peeps smores, right? Right.
